For anyone traveling Highway 21, a stop at the Alberta Government campsite on the south side of the Battle River is a must for this site literally reeks of history. This is the old Laboucane settlement where a large Metis colony once stood. Across the river, on the north bank of the Battle River, was the community of Selvais, which was surveyed in what was known as “Settlement Survey,” that is long, narrow farms fronting on the river. A drive up the hill on the gravel road leads to the old village site. The Duhamel Historical Society has preserved the old church, the only remaining building.
