The town was named for the Red Ensign that was, until 1965, Canada’s national flag. But despite its pretentious title, Ensign never grew much beyond its modest beginning. It is located approximately five miles south and east of Brant. It is another product of the over-optimism of the railroad builder who envisioned thriving towns all over the prairie wheat belt. No matter that many of these places were less than 10 miles apart. There was a general store in 1910, a lumberyard, and several other small businesses. No more than 30 people ever populated the site.
