History has it that Fort Edmonton was named after the town of Edmonton on the outskirts of London, England. History also has it that it was named after Edmonton Estate, ancestral home of the Deputy Governor of the Hudson Bay Company, Sir James Winter Lake. Either way, it is still named Fort Edmonton. Next to it was Fort Augustus. While Fort Edmonton was built by the Hudson Bay Company, Fort Augustus was built by its competitor, the North West Company. The site of both is easy enough to locate for the federal historical sites people erected a stone cairn there in 1926; it sits almost directly across the Saskatchewan River from and due north of the modern town of Fort Saskatchaewan. Both are a must for the traveling ghost towner.
