DUNDAS HARBOUR

NAME: Dundas Harbour
COUNTY: Nunavut Territory
ROADS: 4WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Arctic: Cold Summers - Bitter Cold Winters
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Summer, unless you are an Arctic Survivalist
COMMENTS: Located at 74 degrees North Latitude on Devon Island, overlooking Lancaster Sound in Canada's Nunavut Territory. Before 1999, this was in the Northwest Territories, but the Canadian Government split up part of this area for the Inuit people to govern.0 residents, and has been since 1951.The buildings still contain some supplies and are still in remarkebly good shape.
REMAINS: 6 buildings - fairly intact
Visited here in August of 2007 while on an Artic cruise ship.Dundas Harbour was built in 1924 and inhabited from 1924 - 1933 & 1945 - 1951.The reason that this outpost was built was due to Canada's concern of the threat of sovereignty of their Arctic Archipelago islands. There are only 6 buildings that make up the town; a Royal Canadian Mounted Police Building, Hudson Bay Trading post, 2 storage buildings and 2 outhouses.A small cemetary is located just north of the town containg 4 gravesites, one for Cst Victor Maisonneuve who committed suicide in 1926, Cst William Stephens who accidently shot himself while walrus hunting in 1927,a baby of one of the special constables daughter, and a Scottish Whaler. The only way to get to Dundas harbour would be by ship, plane or maybe dog sled in the winter. The closest town is Resolute, about 200 miles away.Muskox graze all through the site and walrus can be seen just offshore.Average temps in August would be about 40 degrees F. Submitted by: Mark A.
