REMAINS:
Prior to 1840 Jamestown was a busy village. On the banks of Catfish Creed, a wealthy merchant from St. Thomas built a gristmill, a sawmill and a store about a mile upstream from Port Bruce. In 1835 he laid out a small townsite that soon sprouted about ten houses. A post office operated briefly from 1853 to 1857 during which time the village contained a hotel and the general store as well as a blacksmith and a wagon maker. But when the railroads bypassed Port Bruce the future of Jamestown vanished. In 1879 a visitor described it as “a flourishing little place that has now gone to decay.”
