REMAINS:
Once a bustling village along the Sydenham Road that led pioneer settlers to their distant farm lots in the Queen’s Bush, a string of small hotels serving traveler’s basic needs was Melancthon. In 1890, the town experienced its heyday of the era with several stores, hotels, a Methodist church, a school, a town hall, a railway station, a sawmill, and a grain elevator. Following the close of World War I, the town began to fade and the general store is Melancthon’s only remaining business. Even the gravestones in the cemetery have been uprooted and bunched together as a memorial to a once energetic community.
