The birth of Northwood in the 1850s can be contributed to the railroad. As the rail lines weaved their way through the province, sidings were built including stations and a grid plan developed for streets and residential lots. The railroads fully expected towns to develop around the sidings and some did. Northwood was one of those towns. The area was heavily timbered, ideal for sawmills and the shipment of lumber by rail. When timber became scarce, farms were developed and the shipment of produce kept the rail lines in business. All this changed when highways and trucks replaced trains as the means of transport for farm products. Rail sidings were closed, station houses demolished and people moved elsewhere. That is what happened to Northwood. Among what is left of the original town, there are a few newer homes here and there and that might mean a rebirth for the old town. Submitted by: Henry Chenoweth
