REMAINS:

In its heyday, Port Robinson was a busy Welland Canal port. Known first as Port Beverley after William Beverley Robinson, the name was changed to commemorate Robinson’s last name rather than his middle name. At one time, it was the largest town on the Niagara Peninsula. Steamers linked Port Robinson with Buffalo via the side canal and the Welland River. There were four hotels, four churches, a sawmill, four stores, a gristmill, two blacksmiths and a dry dock. The town’ future was in doubt when the Welland Railway passed close to town but not close enough and did not evolve into the railway center that Welland itself did. As a result, industry choose Welland over Port Robinson. The town’s importance dwindled. There is much to see that speaks of the once glory days of Port Robinson.
