When the British army engineers surveyed the north shore of Lake Ontario for the arrival of the Loyalists, they laid out roads, farm lots and village sites. One was Sandhurst. It failed to develop into a port of any significance. Despite its extensive village plot and wharf, it remained little more than a rural hamlet with a post office and three churches.
