Helvetia's post office was established December 12, 1899 and discontinued December 31, 1921. Situated below the Santa Rita Mountains, Helvetia's population was mostly Mexican, about 300 of them. A 150 ton smelter worked copper from the mines but did not prove successful. in 1911 the mines shut down due to the drop in the price of copper. Today only scattered remnants remain.
