Not a ghost town but a ghost ROAD! In 1915 San Diegans wanted to get a road built to Yuma to attract tourists. The hardest part of the road was the sand dunes as the sand would continually cover the road. To solve the problem, wooden planks were built and laid on the sand and connected. About 3000 vehicles a week traveled across the road. As the sand covered the road, a horse team was brought in and the sections were lifted and dusted off and laid back down and traffic resumed. Some of the wood from the original road was used by General Patton in WWII for firewood. The original road was replaced in 1926 and eventually became I-8. Today many sections of the road remain.
