ACTIVITY:Crossing of Tomichi Pass in Southwest Colorado
LOCATION:
Northeast of Gunnison, Colorado

FEE: None
OPEN DATES:
Late June/July through September
COMENTS: Last time we crossed Tomichi Pass, we almost lost a pick-up truck over the edge. Not sure if there is much "road" remaining after digging out, winching out and dragging the truck off the ledge. There is some very beautiful scenery and some nerve racking intermediate-level four wheeling. There is also a mine on the north slope of the pass. Great fun, but drive VERY slowly over the pass!!

COMENTS: Chimney Rock Archaeological Area is a special place. It offers a glimpse of the challenges faced by those who came before us. Mysteries, myths, legends, and theories abound: Why did a lowlands, agricultural community migrate to the high elevations and harsh conditions of the Chimney Rock mesa...and why did they leave? What attracted them to the twin towers--spirtual purposes? Defense against enemies? Was Chimney Rock a trading post for the ancient Southwest? Chimney Rock is the most isolated and remote of the "outliers" - - the communities connected to Chaco Canyon - - and it is the highest in elevation.
