This town was originally established by the owners of the Portland Mine in 1895 and by 1900 had a population of 3500 people. A strong union town, the city was heart of the labor wars from 1895-1903. 3/4 of all ore from the entire mining district was shipped here as the town was on such level ground. $30,000,000 in gold was produced from the Portland mine by 1911. Begun as Independence, Goldfield reached a population of 3000. One can still visit the sites today right on the highway.

There are a lot of these "boxcar" looking ruins. I haven't a clue if they were used as housing or what. But there are half a dozen in the ghost towns of the Cripple Creek mining district. This is on highway 81, across the road from the main part of Goldfield
