NORTH EMPIRE

NAME: North Empire
COUNTY: Clear Creek
ROADS: 4WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Cold winters, warm summers
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Summer, or during good weather
COMMENTS: Follow N. Main St. out of Empire (becomes North Empire Road). The road goes directly to the old town site (and many trails) but the road is littered with large rocks, making the drive moderately difficult.
REMAINS: Very little. Some small structures and piles of wood/mining debris
North Empire had a population up through 1940, when the town was abandoned during the war effort. Little remains of the town, which is about 2 miles North of the current site of Empire. The North Empire Road is exceedingly difficult for cars. Only attempt in a stock SUV with good clearance, or a modified vehicle. Submitted by: Craig Garaas-Johnson
