Originally called Lake's Camp, North Star sprang up in 1878. It was a very sociable town located around the North Star Lode just minutes from White Pine. It sported the Soup Bone Musical Club. Then in 1893, the town dwindled with the drop in price of precious metals. However, the camp was revived in 1901 and a hotel was opened along with a post office. Today there is evidence of current mining activity. Submitted by: Ghosttowns.com

Lake camp was named for my great grandfather, Henry F. Lake Sr. He was a civil war vetran [he survived Andersonville] and a engineering graduate of Michigan Agriculture College when he first came to Colorado to participate in the "silver /gold boom" He went on to teach school in Lake City, become the County Registar in Gunnison, and all sorts of things. He and his son also started what eventually became the Gunnison News Campion. My father {Rial] worked there in the late 1930' and 1940's. - John Lake
