John Moss found the ore in the Parrot City area and went to San Fransisco to get funding to develop it. Tiburcia Parrot provided that funding, hence the name. Parrot City was bound to be county seat but lost out to Howardsville. In the later years, La Plata county was split up and Parrot City became the seat for La Plata count. By 1883, the population at Parrot City was dwindling and Durango took over the seat. There were over 500 locations staked here, between 500 and 1000 people, a school, post office, many businesses and more. Today there is nothing left but foundations and mining remnants. Most of the buildings burned down. Submitted by: Todd Underwood
