Almost forgotten in the history of Colorado is the role played by Salida. It had to do with a surprise attack by the U.S.Cavalry on a tribe of warring Ute Indians. It was a major victory in the long battle with Indians in Colorado. The battle took place near the site of Salida on April 29, 1855 and was a major factor in opening up the state for settlement. The town has been one of Colorado's most important cities down through the years. It was a gateway to mining camps in all directions. It has been a supply center for the mining areas and for the rich farm and ranchland surrounding it. It has also been a smelting and important railroad town. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
