Began in 1879 with the discovery of carbonate ores in the area. This town grew up around many mines. It was believed to have been named for a man named Joseph Stumpf, however, this man was doing placering in the area long after the town was founded. Mostly a residential town, there were some saloons and a pool hall.Submitted by Tom McCurnin.
