In 1895, hundreds of prospectors came into the "Gunnison Gold Belt" south of Gunnison after the Vulcan and Mammoth Chimney Mines were located. A town was laid out and was first called Camp Creek, but the name was changed to Vulcan in 1897. Vulcan was the Roman god of fire. The town received its name from the nearby Vulcan Hill which was caused by ancient volcanic action. The Vulcan Mine was by far the most productive mine in the area and worked 200 miners during its boom. Several buildings and cabins remain at the site, to be found over a rough twelve-mile road from the highway.Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
