MACKEY

NAME: Mackey
COUNTY: Boone
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 5
CLIMATE: Hot in summer, cold in winter
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Spring or fall.
COMMENTS: Mackey still manages to house a church. It is about a mile over the Boone/Story county line on a paved county road. Most of what was part of this town is gone, except for the church and cemetery.
REMAINS: Church and cemetery.
I do not know much on the history of Mackey, but I learned about it from my father. He told me that there used to be a meat locker up in Mackey and that's how he got to go there. Back in his day, it wasn't much either, but now even that's gone. I am not aware of any remains of the meat locker, so I assume it is long gone. Mackey is a fairly easy accessible ghost town because it is on a paved road. It located in some hills and trees, and is rather kind of pretty. Be careful though-keep your eyes out for the church because otherwise you will miss it. It is located on the corner of the paved road and a gravel road. Trust me-I have missed it myself a few times!
