Close to the Montana Idaho border north of highway 10 is Murray, a gold mining town of two thousand souls in 1885. In 1883, Murray didn't even exist. In 1898, it had all but vanished. Such was the fate of many early mining towns when the ore deposits came to an end. Much is left in Murray today including a few structures as reminders of a town that came and went within a few years.

Murray became so popular and prosperous that in 1885 it became the Shoshone County seat. Though the towns population has dropped from the thousands to less than sixty it still celebrates its gold rush heritage. The annual "Molly B. Damn Days" recalls the life and times of a famous resident of the red light district.Submitted by Henry Chenowith.
