COMMENTS: Gem once had a bank, owned by a Houston, whose beautiful house still remains intact. Gem was a prosperous town, with a grocery store, hardware store, three churches, a post office, and a large public school building. Then, the bank burnt down and everything went downhill from there. Slowly, businesses closed down one by one until all that was left was the post office, which is still running. There are a few very lovely houses in gem and a few very ugly ones. See for yourself!
REMAINS: School house, 3 churches, 2 business buildings
There are about 70 residents living in Gem; one theory about how it got its name is that someone saw a drop of dew on a leaf and exclaimed its resemblence to a sparkling GEM. About three truly old houses still remain. Submitted by: Willow Thomas
