Choate was first named "Sucker Creek" in the 1890s; the name was changed to Choate when the post office was establshed in 1893; the post office closed in 1904. From the appearance of the area today, (not incontrovertible evidence), Choate was an agricultural community. Submitted by: Kurt Wenner

I found a minor error in the Choate, Michigan page at http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/mi/choate.html. The page conjectures that "[f]rom the appearance of the area today, (not incontrovertible evidence), Choate was an agricultural community." Based on an article published 12-13-1900 by the Minneapolis Journal, it looks as if the town was actually owned by the Oshkosh Logging and Lumber company and sold it after they decided to abandon operations. The company owned all buildings and land within the town including a sawmill, theater and a schoolhouse. At that time, the population was estimated at 500 persons. Eric Thomas Johnson
