When the Genoa mine opened in 1896 G. G. Hartley of Duluth planned out a town named Sparta. On August 7th 1896 Sparta became an official town of 200 people. Soon after Sparta had 1,000 people. But then the mining company wanted to clear the land so they moved every body to Gilbert but some people remained. The town went on with it's business until March 31'st 2015 the lease the people had with the people that lived there was done and most of the people left. But it's legacy lives on in Rich Mattson's This town (ghost town.)
