CONTRERAS. Settlement 25 mi N of Socorro. Named for Matias Contreras, who raised cattle and sheep in the neighborhood. An ancestor of Matias may have been one of two persons with this name in NM by 1692; Jose de Contreras, a native of San Luis Potosi, who joined the NM exiles at Guadalupe del Paso as early as 1687, and Simon de Contreras, a native of Zacatecas, who settled at Santa Cruz.
