ELKINS

NAME: Elkins
COUNTY: Chavez
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 6
CLIMATE: see Roswell
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Year around
COMMENTS: Take paved state highway # 70 north out of Roswell. Strictly ranch country with lots of grass and shinery (oak)and antelope. At one time the home of buffalo and plains indians. There are still a lot of indian artifacts laying around out in those sand hills.Elkins was a small ranch community. It purpose was to educate the kids and a place to get the mail. All thats left now is the old rock school house. When I was a kid we would not even think about missing a dance at the Elkins school house. The Stockton Brothers out of Roswell would play. Fiddle, guitar and piano. You have never heard music like that. It would stay in your head for days and days. Your visit won't take long if you decide to go.
REMAINS: Rock school house. It was old in 1937. It will be there for a few hundred years.
Strictly a ranch community for the benefit of the local ranchers. I am not too sure there was evera post office there. After the school shut down, 1945/1946 ? the building was maintained and was a local meeting place . The exterior of the building looks just the same today as it did back in1940.
