BUTTERFIELD SPRING

NAME: Butterfield Spring
COUNTY: Nye
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Hot summer, cool winter.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Anytime.
COMMENTS: Worth the trip.
REMAINS: Most of the original buildings.

Henry Butterfield was the first man to visit the site although Indians had used it during hunting trips. The site was the source of cool refreshing water for centuries. Butterfield had a salt mine ten miles south and arrived at the springs in 1867. Several unsuccessful mining attempts were made but the location was more suited to ranching. The spring itself makes Butterfield Spring unique. The depth of the spring is unknown but its clean fresh water stays at a constant temperature of fifty-four degrees Fahrenheit. Most of the original buildings still stand.
