Keystone was always more of a camp than a town. It had its beginning in 1868 as a company town for the Old Dominion Mining Company. The camp’s population soon reached fifty, enough to support two saloons. The initial excitement soon died down and the camp was mostly silent for the next twenty years. The Keystone mine operated only intermittently. In 1910 a rich silver strike was made at Keystone. From that time until as recently as 1990 different mining companies for different reasons operated at Keystone. A number of old stone buildings are left at Keystone that makes for an interesting visit. Fresh spring water is available.
