Mount Hope dates back to 1871 when a man named McGeary who organized the McGeary Mining district made the first discoveries. By January 1872, twenty claims were being worked. A small camp soon formed and a townsite was laid out. By summer, several mines had been developed with the richest producing ore valued at $100 per ton. Things went well until 1878 when the ore ran out and the town quickly died. The camp was entirely deserted until 1886, when the Mount Hope mine was reopened and operated on and off until 1947 during which time it produced several million dollars in zinc. At the site, remains from the original Mount Hope settlement are scarce.
