POTOMAC

NAME: Potomac
COUNTY: Nye

GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Hot summer, cool winter.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Anytime.
COMMENTS: More modern
REMAINS: Quite a few

One of the first camps in Nye County was formed in 1862. It was called Potomac. Its founder was J.P. Cortez who worked his claim until 1870. The small camp saw only limited activity afterwards. But the site became fairly active from the 1930s to the early 1950s when the then owners employed a small crew to work three mines and leased out other properties. Wood cabins were built at Potomac during this period and they are still standing. Remains at Potomac are fairly extensive although they are quite modern by ghost town standards.
