Much of the credit for the founding of Rockland is given to a Mr. Keene, a Pine Grove resident. In 1869, he found a rich vein of silver and gold about three and a half miles from his home and built a mill just below the mine. The town that grew up around the mine was named Rockland, probably for the rocky cliffs that surrounded the area. Keene had cash flow problems and could not pay his miners on time. One miner was so outraged, he set fire to the mill. He was caught and sentenced to prison for arson. Following Keene, several others tried to succeed in running the mine but all failed. Another ghost town was born.
