As one might guess, the small camp of Sawmill grew up around a sawmill. It was during the boom years in the 1870s the mines at Morey, Tybo, and Hot Creek were the main users of the wood the mill processed. The camp also served as a horse-changing stop on the stage line. The Willow Creek Ranch has been operating continuously over the past twenty-five years. A number of ranch buildings, including the old ranch house, remain at the site.
