SHOSHONE

NAME: Shoshone
COUNTY: White Pine
ROADS: 4WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Hot summer, cool winter.
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Anytime.

COMMENTS: Interesting Scenery.
REMAINS: A few ruins and a handful of residents.

The Shoshone District came to life in 1869 after some initial discoveries were made. But there were no mining camps until the 1880s and by 1896 the town was large enough to warrant a post office. While mining in Swallow Canyon was not very profitable, the huge success of the Minerva mines, located a few miles to the south, kept Shoshone alive for many years. Many Minerva miners preferred to live in Shoshone while working elsewhere. The post office closed in 1959 leaving only a handful of residents in the town. Several buildings remain at Shoshone and additional ruins are located in Swallow Canyon.
