Located a few miles from Manhattan, the White Caps mine and mill burned down in 1936 after operations that began in 1915 and ceased in 1940. Production was inconsistent during the years for various reasons but during its years of activity produced $2.7 million worth of ore. Remains at White Caps are extensive and interesting and are not without their hazards. When visiting White Caps be extremely cautious. The 1,300-foot shaft of the White Caps mine is in the open ground in front of the two remaining buildings and cannot be seen until one is on top of it.
