Ragged Top was the name of a mining district in which the settlement of Balmoral was located. These settlements were developed to work the shallow deposits of silicified gold ore that were discovered in 1897. Balmoral supported a solid business district, homes and a school named Ragged Top. Several houses remain as well as the well-preserved school. The area is now known as Preston and can be easily reached from Trojan by traveling 2 miles west over the old Burlington right of way to Spearfish Canyon, then northward about one and a half miles on a most used dirt road.
