INTERIOR

NAME: Interior
COUNTY: Jackson
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Hot, dry summers; cold, snowy winters
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Summer
COMMENTS: Interior is nothing but a gas station, post office, several houses, and a fork in the road.Interior was established when the Milwaukee Road built a line from Murdo, SD to Rapid City in 1907. Interior is home of the world's best Indian Fry Bread. The "town" is located two miles outside of Badlands National Park.
REMAINS: Several houses, a post office, several campgrounds and motels, and an abandoned railroad grade.
Interior is the most populated ghost town on the old Milwaukee Road line between Kadoka and Rapid City. The town existed from the construction of the railroad line in 1907 until the 1930's when the Dust Bowl hit that region hard and drove people away. The abandonment of the railroad in 1980 contributed to more losses of industry. Submitted by: Andrew Shireman
