Gold was discovered in the Rockerville area in 1876 and by 1880 it had a hundred buildings and a population of around a thousand. It was one of the roaringest mining towns in the area. Like many mining camps, the town had its ups and downs and eventually the placers played out and the miners departed for greener pastures. Present-day Rockerville, on US 16 between Rapid City and Hill City, is given over to a reconstruction of an early Black Hills mining town. Various tourist attractions are provided in a setting of false-fronts, wooden sidewalks, and a profusion of relics of by-gone times. Submitted by Henry Chenoweth.
