OTIS CHALK

NAME: Otis Chalk
COUNTY: Howard
ROADS: 4WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: Hot summers and cold winters (watch for rattle snakes)
BEST TIME TO VISIT: Any
COMMENTS: Southeastern Howard county off of Farm to market road 821 near Chalk hill. Careful driving in this area as it is one of the last open ranges in Texas, the cattle roam free and periodically may be standing in the highway.
REMAINS: Post office
Otis Chalk, Texas was named for the rancher who owned the land on either side of the highway. Oil was discovered on this ranch in 1926 and the oil boom was on. A post office was opened here sometime around April of 1939 and the town reported a population of fifty. There are thousands of towns like this in Texas. Many started as tent cities and most of them died out when the boom ended, however some are still inhabited. Otis Chalk, Texas is on private land, I highly recomend that visitors familiarize themselves with the Texas penal code before visiting. Tresspassing could have an adverse affect on your well being,so get permission first. Submitted by: Chris
