The Hiawatha coal mine was discovered here in 1909. A railroad was then built to the mine from price. By 1911 500 people lived here and the town was incorporated. In 1914 the Utah Railway built to Helper and the old track to Price was closed. The United States Fuel Company built stores, homes, schools and a hotel here. Between 1940 and 1950 over 1500 people lived here. When I visited the town on Nov 1 1997 I was told that the mine is going to be reopened. The company is also repairing most of the old homes and buildings. The whole town sight and area is posted to trespassing and the road into the town sight has a gate across it. Permission must be obtained before entering this old town. Submitted by Bob Bezzant.
