BLUE SULPHUR SPRINGS

NAME: Blue Sulphur Springs
COUNTY: Greenbrier, or a nearby county
ROADS: 2WD
GRID: 1
CLIMATE: average
BEST TIME TO VISIT: whenever
COMMENTS: Was significan in Civil War. Confederate cemetary nearby. All of the town, except the large hotel, was burned in the war. Bullets remain in the outside walls of hotel. Named for a sulphur spring in the field in front of the hotel, which has a roof over it on pillars. In those days, people thought sulphur water had healing power. In WV, there are 3 other towns named after sulphur springs, White Sulphur Springs, Green Sulphur, and Red Sulphur. All interesting in their own way. Lots of folks think that the only ghost towns are way out West. Appalachia has a lot of ghost towns, created by the Civil War, depleting coal resources, and lack of jobs as the younger generation moves out of state in search of employment (as I did!). Morning Star, Uler, Looneyville, and Duo are the first towns that come to mind, but there are lots of others.
REMAINS: In Blue Sulphur, only the large hotel and the sulphur spring, except for a few residents who haven't got the sense to leave.
Time of desertion was when the Union Troops burned the town. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~vfcrook/springs/bsspring.html Submitted by: Eddie Harold
