McKendree was home to Miners hospital number 2 which was established here between 1900 and 1902. The name of the hospital was changed in 1916 to the McKendree Hospital. By the 1920's the site even boasted a power plant. A nursing school was also established in 1910 and operated until 1939 when the hospital closed. The hospital reopened later and continued in operation until 1956. The structures stood well into the 1980's but then succombed to decay and vandals.
