John Nuttall gave his name to this community around 1873. The population of this mining town was 75 in 1903 and 410 by 1910 and 359 by 1920. In 1920 the lease on this mine was purchased by Henry Ford and sons in order to provide coal for its River Rouge Automobile Plant.
