The name Quinnimont comes from Latin roots and means five mountains which describes the local landscape. The town was first formed to support an iron furnace. The furnace only lasted three years but coal mining took over and by 1874 a railway station was also located here. Many of the railroad workers lived here. The town had a store, post office, church and two schools. In 1910 the population was estimated at 540 and by 1920 it was 315.
