Mike at Cerro Gordo told me about the "road" from Cerro Gordo to the Burgess mine. It was his opinion that this was the easiest way in.
Well, since I would be HIKING behind the cars (I wouldnt do well in one of the cars on that kind of road!!!! You dont like the scary drops off either, do you?) I think we should pass on this one!
Which of these routes that you described is the one that Starbuck took?

: I hate giving out directions to sites, and even asked Starbuck to remove the directions from his site, but it seems the Ridgecrest BLM has posted some info about the 4 routes into Beveridge. I spoke to Steve Smith at the BLM this morning about the routes, and have narrowed it down to the "French Spring trail", and the "Burgess Mine trail". These directions are not complete and will require map and compass (GPS).

: The Burgess Mine trail is a 18 mile drive from Cerro Gordo along a 4x4 road, possibily hardcore, with narrow cliff hanger, and off camber!. (Cat's favorite)and then a 8 mile hike down to Beveridge Canyon. You hike back out up hill (YUK!).

: The French Spring trail starts near Lone Pine, and involves a 5500 ft. climb up switchbacks, Steve say's it's about a 2 day hike with packs to Forgotten Pass and then down to Beveridge Canyon the next day. This hike can include a stop at a nearby sawmill located in a meadow nearby. Boyscout troups have made this hike, along with other groups. I think this sounds like the best route. I have a copy of this route hand drawn on a topo.
