Get a copy of Stan Paher's book NEVADA GHOST TOWNS & MINING CAMPS. Stan is a fellow Reno-ite and has a business called Nevada Publications. Also check out Shawn Hall's website at http://members.xoom.com/_XOOM/ghosttowner/index.html. He's written a number of Nevada ghost town publications plus carrys a large supply of other ghost town related topics.
There's a huge number of ghost towns and historic sites within 1-4 hours of Reno and a bit of exploring the books as well as the ghost towns should provide hours of fun and excitement for you and your children.
