I was out on the Arizona desert in the Western region commonly refered to as the KOFA's, this last weekend and came across a disturbing scene. While on a four wheel drive trip with a few close friends, we decided to break camp early last Sunday morning and do a bit of cross-country before heading back to Tucson. While trecking across what seemed like an endless expanse of desert, we came into a flat area that had been the homestead of "Barabra Hovatter".
We spent a little time expoloring their home site -- a beautiful cactus garden, old burnt down trailers, an old International Harvester school bus from the 30's. Up on a hill just a short distance from their home site, we came across the grave sites of Barbara and what we believe to have been her husband's grave site.
The only indication of who was burried there was a small concrete plack at the head of one grave that read "Barbara Hovatter", born Feb 1944, died 20 June, 1968 -- she was just 24. The grave next to her's had a paper card under glass that was alost impossible to read... but the last name was also Hovatter and the date of death was also 20 June, 1968. We took this to be her husbands grave... his age was 26.
I was hoping that someone might be able to shed some light on what became of the Hovatter's that lived in our beautiful Arizona desert... Barbara and her husband...
Seemed like a tragedy might have occured and all of us that visited their graves last weekend would like to know who they were, where they hailed from, and what became of them.
