Yeah, you should have kept on going thru the gate. The rancher there doesn't mind. Probably should let him know where you are going, and then close the gate behind you. The road gets kinda rough and rocky after that, especially over the dry wash, and then up a small incline. 4WD is definitely needed here (or horseback). The area of Guadelupe Canyon that was passable later became known as Skeleton Canyon because of all the people who were killed there at one time or another. According to one historian who has studied the area for about 30 years, over 100 persons were killed in this canyon over the years. Through this canyon was where rustled cattle was brought back and forth between the U.S. and Mexico. According to survivors of the ambush there, it is where Old Man Clanton and his group of rustlers were ambushed by Mexican Rurales. None other than Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and Warren Earp were in attendance. This canyon was frequently used as a trade route between Mexico and the U.S., and many Mexicans lost their lives and had their cattle rustled by the likes of Curly Bill Brocius, Johnny Ringo, and their group. It is also the Geronimo Surrender Site, where Gen. George Crook met with geronimo and his band.
On the URL I have provided, you can see some pictures of Skeleton Canyon.
