I live in the San Diego area. The closest thing we have to ghost towns are the many mining ruins left in the Julian/Cuyamaca area, such as Eagle mine, the Stonewall mine, and the Warlock mine. There are numerous mines in the Banner grade area also.
They are all within an hour of San Diego.
If you travel about 3 hours east towards the Coorado river, there are the ghost towns/sites of Tumco, Ogilby, and Picacho.
