: I have camped at Aurora, NV and Masonic, CA (north of Bodie) w/o any problems, because usually it is public land. But places like Cerro Gordo and Ballarat, CA are private property and you need to check with owners or caretakers. If it is public property check with the local Ranger station for a fire permit. I camped last summer in area just north of Bodie. have fun!!!
We have also camped at Aurora, Masonic and near Bodie as well as a bunch of other spots in California, Nevada and Utah. We have never run into any problems! Its fun, really, staying up late hoping to see a ghost but we havnt yet!
