Gilman was the company town for a zinc mine located at the bottom of the Eagle River Canyon below the town. If I remember correctly, it was abandoned in the early 1980s. The last time I visited there (with permission) was in 1993; there were lots of houses and some commercial buildings (even a "ghost" bowling alley). The site is directly over the mountain from Vail, and they are currently negotiating to buy the site for expansion of the ski area.
